Vaginitis is a medical term used to describe various conditions that cause infection or inflammation of the vagina. These conditions can result from a vaginal infection caused by organisms such as bacteria, yeast, viruses, as well as an irritation from chemicals in creams, sprays, or clothing.

Symptoms of vaginitis include:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal odor
  • Vaginal itching
  • Vaginal irritation
  • Discomfort during intercourse

There are three most common types of vaginal infections; there are Candida or Yeast infections, Bacterial Vaginitis, and Trichomonas vaginitis.

If you are having symptoms of vaginitis, please call the office and speak to a triage nurse. They will schedule you an appointment with one of our providers. The provider will take a sample of the discharge from the vagina and view it under a microscope to decide. A culture may also be sent to an outside laboratory for testing.

Treatment you may receive for vaginitis includes either an antibiotic, or a cream that is applied to the vagina.
